The book is good, wordy and lengthy with some decent photos but its not a great book on the chronology of tattoo history.. its just.. stuff from the tattoo world. :/ It was shipped in a big box without protection so I got the book all dog earred before I even saw it.

As a sociologist with strong anthropological interests turned tattoo apprentice, this is exactly the book I was looking for! Much of the tattoo world only goes back a century for its history, then alludes to ancient cultures. Just by flipping through this book upon arrival I can see that this is not the case with this book.If there was ever a college class on the history of tattoos, this should be one of the required texts. The only thing that could make this better is if the book was actually divided into a series focusing on each area/timeframe and included more information. *hint hint*

Overall, the historical review is above average to excellent. However, the writing is exceedingly dry and I had some difficulty reading this for more than 15-30 minutes at a time without nodding off. Still, it is the most comprehensive single source that I'm aware of that covers this subject matter. I'm planning on picking up a second copy as a gift for my artist.

My boyfriend recently got his first two tattoos and is hooked. He is a history buff as well so I got him this book as a little gift and he LOVES it. Interesting if you are interested in history and or tattoos. Would be a great "coffee table book" for a tattoo parlor!

You know, I guess I was just looking for a little more current history. Most of what you'll find in this book deals with ancient tribal and oriental histories. It's kind of like that college history class we all took dealing with ancient civilizations. Tough to find relationships to today's world (for me at least). Not a knock on the book itself, it is what it is, just my $.02.

This book has great illustrations but it’s more of a history book with good pics.

I got this as a gift for my cousin and he loved it. Very nice and informative book.

After inviting them to visit him in London, their Uncle Nimrod informs them that they are descended from the Marid tribe of djinn. As he begins their training, they travel to Egypt, where they are pursued by Iblis, the leader of an enemy tribe who thinks Nimrod knows the location of the lost tomb of Akhenaten. This pharaoh bound 70 djinn to his service and whoever finds his tomb will have the ability to command them and shift the balance of power from good to evil. As they travel around the world, the siblings and their uncle have numerous adventures, culminating in an encounter with Akhenaten's ghost. The writing has a cinematic quality as Kerr provides detailed glimpses at the changing scenery; at times, there is too much description, particularly of room furnishings. In-depth characterizations are sacrificed for the often humorous, fast-moving plot. Although their powers are not yet fully fledged (they're constantly forgetting whether spiraling into a bottle should be done clockwise or counterclockwise), the twins must help their powerful uncle Nimrod preserve the balance between opposing djinn tribes. Kerr's background as a writer for adults may explain his tendency to give grown-ups more personality than his preteen protagonists, and one sometimes winces at characterizations that seem like holdovers from the colonial era (one Egyptian servant named Karim is dubbed "Creemy" because he smiles "like a cat that's had the cream"). But it's hard not to admire the well-crafted scaffolding that supports the fantasy (for instance, all djinn suffer from claustrophobia--you'd have it too if your ancestors were always getting trapped inside stoppered vessels). Casting kids in roles of real magic and power is a time-tested premise, and this variation gains extra appeal from its sources in a refreshingly different tradition than those generally tapped by witch-and-wizardry retreads. The enticing metallic cover won't hurt, either. Expect the twins to transubstantiate in two more volumes to complete the Children of the Lamp trilogy. About the Author Vinai is a passionate Web Developer and open source enthusiast since 1998. Today his main focus in on Training Developers how to customize Magento. The first language he used for real projects and fell in love with was PERL, quickly followed by JavaScript and others. Since 2001 he is mainly focussed on PHP, but trying to learn at least one new language or framework each year. Most projects where custom developed applications, ranging from database converters, interactive CD-ROMs (that was a thing at one time), video compression, Typo3 extensions, Intershop cartridges, online shops to hosting, networking, automated testing, multi-user stock simulation, and more. He used to like to describe himself as a Jack of all trades, master of none. Since March 2008 Vinai specialized on the Magento platform, which, at the time, still was in the later Beta stages. Working as a freelancer for his own clients and as in large teams he was able to gather valuable experience in projects ranging from very small to quite large. This enabled Vinai to move into training Developers how to effectively customize Magento. Since then he has spent thousands of hours giving trainings, both in-house and open to everybody, in all aspects of the Magento platform. Topics range from extension development to using git with Magento, performance tuning and automated testing. Since March 2010 he also is Instructor for the official Magento U developer trainings for Magento. He spent two years as a full time employed trainer for Magento, but decided he preferred the freedom to focus on projects he choses himself, and works as a freelancer again since January 2014. He is a member of the Magento Certification Advisory Board and was one of the first to pass the MCD+ exam.
