I am the co-owner of a Lean/Agile Operations consulting firm that works primarily with software developers. A lot of the practices and values behind the practices in the book are our own in some similar form or another. Don't get me wrong; there are creative ideas in there, but if you stay abreast of various trends in agile software development, you're probably not going to see a specific technique that just blows your mind (although you will probably appreciate the value of paired programming more than you do, now).For me, the power of this book is that it starts with a core of wanting to create a company to end human suffering with regards to software - that includes both the usage of it and the construction of it. The practices are the results of experiments to produce this thing. As such, the book tightly weaves together a lot of things that are missing in conversations in the Lean and Agile software communities, which tend to center heavily on practices, but unfortunately not so much about why someone might (or might not) adopt a given practice, or why anyone would even want to do this in the first place.As the author recommends, he starts with WHY. The practices and the culture emerged in the pursuit of that goal of joyful software development and usage. You couldn't just drop those practices onto another dev shop and expect magic to happen, not without a serious re-examining of why that shop exists and what it believes.This book got me inspired again about software development and business in a way I haven't been for a while, and it is prompting deep conversations within my own company about our ideas and values that I am certain will alter our business model. If this book gives you a blueprint for anything, it's how to create a company around your reason for existence and your shared beliefs. It could, with some careful thought and discussions, help any business in any vertical in this way.The one thing you don't get a lot of in this particular book is a lot of information on the slogs that got them to this point. This is not completely absent from the book; it's just not the book's purpose and, therefore, you don't see a lot of it. You don't get a lot of narrative on the struggles Menlo went through to get the ship sailing or the various failed experiments along the way. The book focuses far more on the lessons reaped from those mistakes, as it should. I only point this out because I can see companies or teams within companies trying to transform themselves along lines inspired by the book and becoming discouraged when the road gets rough because the book doesn't explicitly go into those times in detail.But what the book does, it does very well. I can't imagine someone reading this book and not being inspired to approach their business is new ways.

With offices are generally based on seniority, one classic improvement effort is to fix the resulting layouts since colleagues are spread far and wide.The Menlo offices lack cubicles and all the computers sit on tables. They can reconfigure the space on a dime and pull tables together when people are on the same project. Sometimes they rearrange the tables just to “shake things up.” With programmers in a wide open space, “there was less I and a lot more we. Menlo solved this problem by having programmers work in pairs.It took a second to understand that pairing not only meant people always work in teams of two — it meant that two people shared one computer and only one of them accessed the keyboard at a time. Each software pair holds on to the two horns of a plastic Viking helmet as they address the group and then they pass it along.Sandbagging and ReworkMost organizations struggle with forecasts and estimates. By definition they’re inaccurate. For a software development company they’re critical. Clients need to know how long it will take and how much it will cost. Since the programmers are closest to the work, they’re the best source of estimation. At Menlo, leadership commits to supporting their estimates — they are trusted regardless of whether or not they’re right.Consider what happens in less-evolved cultures. If programmers underestimate, there are late deliveries, cost overruns and unhappy clients. Fear of being blamed for mistakes leads to sandbagging. But if they overestimate, the client balks at the price. Neither of these is good for the customer, the business or the employee.At Menlo, if the estimates are wrong, then they just relay that to the client. Either work moves up and gets done faster, or they agree it’s going to take longer and cost more — end of story. Since programmers are not penalized for wrong estimates they take total control of setting and working toward aggressive milestones without fear of retribution. He realized that if his employees felt safe to make mistakes then they’d be willing to take risks. They conduct a “Planning Game” on a big table where a sheet of paper represents one week of work. Customers and project managers map out what work will be done based on what literally “fits” in each week.Once the work is planned and agreed to, it goes on the Work Authorization Board. This wall displays the tasks due each day along with the pairs is responsible. Sticky dots represent status reports and a horizontal piece of string indicates the current day so observers can see whether or not they’re on track. No mystery about the work in progress.They also have boards on the wall representing revenue, expenses and profits. One board represents the salary and position of each employee. Other walls are decorated with hand-crafted posters that say things like, “Make Mistakes Faster.” The visuals and transparency combat the fog and inaction that result from the more typical “out of sight, out of mind” reality of organizational information.Who Works at Menlo?For most organizations, the hiring process is a crapshoot. The main tool is the job interview but, quoting Richard Sheridan, that’s “two people in a room lying to each other for 2 hours.” The interview has never been a reliable way to find out if someone is a good fit. Menlo scrapped it completely.They designed their own activity-based process focused entirely on cultural fit. Of course, programmers need to know how to program, but since it’s truly a learning organization, people can always pick up the skills they need. The result resembles “high-speed dating” but with proctors and evaluations. They bring about 50 job candidates in as a group. They pair them up with each other and assign each pair a Menlo observer.They designed their own activity-based process focused entirely on cultural fit. Of course, programmers need to know how to program, but since it’s truly a learning organization, people can always pick up the skills they need.Pairs are given one pencil, one sheet of paper and a problem to solve while observers sit and watch what happens. Observers watch their assigned pairs while asking themselves a series of questions:“Would I like to pair with this person for a week?”“Would I feel supported if I were struggling?”“Would I be able to support them and would they listen if I did?”“Would I learn something from this person?”“Would they help me grow?”They pair off the candidates 3 times, always with a new observer. After they leave, the observers discuss the group. This leads to a vote on who gets invited back for Round 2. It all hinges on whether the potential hiree would play well with others, share and be respectful. Do they have good “kindergarten skills?” Beyond that they’re just looking for “able learners with curiosity” since teaching them skills is the easy part.High-Tech AnthropologistsMenlo works with their clients, but they also venture into the world to better understand the end users. They dedicate an entire role to this process called the “High-Tech Anthropologist.” This group watches people use and interact with software and prototypes. Their one one guideline — “observation without interruption.” In one case they saw a user wearing rubber gloves while handling a prototype due to their proximity to toxins. The intended touch screen would not work with gloves. Without this discovery, the client would have paid for the development of useless software.More Customer InteractionIn addition to spending time with end-users, Menlo hosts a weekly show-and-tell session with their client sponsors. In a reversal, it’s the customers who “show” the staff how they use the software. Programmers sit and watch as the clients demonstrate and “tell” them how it feels. Once again, “Menlonians” observe and learn.LeadershipThere is no discernable hierarchy at Menlo. They have no formal reporting relationships, but they encourage people to become leaders. They find that those who are “gentle, empathetic, and trusting teachers” naturally grow into leaders. Another extension of this organic approach is that it’s up to the employees to award raises and promotions. Employees are judged by their peers.Routine and DisciplineBeneath the organic leadership, the “high-speed voice technology,” the viking helmet and the focus on joy, there are clearly defined, rigorous systems. What might seem like anarchy to some has a deceptively strong set of rules. The paired programming, the lack of walls, the weekly estimates and the Work Authorization Board are non-negotiable. And those who make it through their speed-date end up working harder than they ever have in their lives.“Humans are wired to work on things bigger than themselves, to be in community with one another. It’s why we join teams and companies, and work very hard and long to achieve a difficult and elusive shared goal.”Learning From MenloThis is an extraordinary culture to read about. Even for those not in the software development industry it’s instructive and aspirational. But, just as you cannot simply copy the Lean culture of Toyota, you cannot copy what Menlo has done. The good news for everyone is that this masterful storyteller is writing another book titled, Chief Joy Officer: How Great Leaders Elevate Human Energy and Eliminate Fear. Watch for it on November 13, 2018.

I skimmed the table of contents and immediately jumped to the "Accountability and Results" section. I find the author's engaging discussion about "Actual Actuals" revealing.The author describes a false economy of "fake actuals" provided by the lowest-price competitor. Furthermore, this data becomes the basis for useless "future planning." The passages here and elsewhere pass a routine smell test. Moreover, I appreciate the readability and analysis the author provides.Will this book make a difference in the modern workplace? While I am skeptical about these methods being broadly adopted in the US, this book offers premium differentiators for employers in service, knowledge work, and high-skill industries. Joy may bring dollars, and these dollars may bring more Joy and justification.I found this book to be a delightful reconsideration of standard workforce methods that sap Joy. I wish the monolithic defense contractor where I was previously employed worked differently. Kudos.

For those of us who have long suspected there is a better approach to work, Rich Sheridan has now documented proof of what is possible! And it's not a fairy tail being told by some theoretical professor who hasn't had to actually make things happen in the real world. It was done by real people in the real business world and in an industry plagued by professional burn-out and high-dollar project failures!! Personally, I can't wait to begin shifting the culture of my own workplace and trying mini-Menlo experiments of our own... Signs are grouped by subject rather than alphabetical, which can lead to a lot of page flipping. There is an index, so I utilize that a lot! Helpful hints are given, signs are clear, alternative signs are given where they exist. My sign language book was 30 years old, so these signs are updated from that!

My homeschool student and I are learning to sign the basics with this easy to read book. It covers letters and numbers, as well as how and where to hold your hands for the best view of the person watching. I already know some signing, so it has been easy for me to jump back in and continue. My student knew none, and is having it just an easy. The book divides words into groupings, like family, school, etc, for easier use. Great as a starter text!

This is a product review for Sign Language Made Simple: A Complete Introduction to American Sign Language. I bought this book because I have been trying to learn how to sign for two years now and I am always searching for a good book to help me, since I don't have anyone to practice with, after reading the reviews, I decided to give it a try and ordered it. With my Prime membership, it took three days to arrive since I ordered it late at night, it arrived in a yellow package and was left inside my mailbox.The book is like a soft-cover textbook in size and not heavy (At least for me.) I read it a bit and looked through it, just to compare it a bit with what I know and other books I have tried. The introduction was interesting, it talked a bit about the sign language history, I found the alphabet page to be good as well and love the fact that in the back, there is a few quotes and the signs to go with it. For me, this book is different from the ones I've tried before because it not only teaches signing but it also teaches a lot about the deaf culture.Included is a picture I just took of the book, I bought mine used but it still looks fairly new. Underneath the book is the package it came in.Any questions, feel free to ask, I'll be happy to answer them as best as I can.

I am trying to teach myself the basics of ASL and this book is pretty handy. Some of the illustrations are a little ambiguous and I have to go online to find a video to get it right. (Does that arrow mean "back and forth" or "left and right" is a good example.) I like the way the book is divided into categories of sign and it has some fun reading about ASL and its idioms that don't directly translate into English.

Got this for class. Some signs are considered "out dated" by our instructor. Otherwise it is easy to read and understand and made very well.

Information was very thorough in this used book and will be useful. The pictured cover is different than what I received and is a little dinged up but should be fine.

Thus was just what I wanted. Basic sign language to help a victim of a stroke who has lost his speech. I look forward to using it with him.

It helped me identify some patterns/feelings, but the example scenarios didn't ring true for me personally. I struggled to draw parallels between the example couples/individuals and my own situation. It seemed very focused on jealousy that stems from a monogamous couple opening up their relationship (and maintaining a "primary" status with one another), rather than the jealousy that can occur in any poly relationship.

Wow!! This book has helped me navigate polyamory and has truly been life changing!! It’s literally therapy and you learn SO much! Even if you’re not jealous, it covers anger and sadness etc etc. absolutely great!

I heard about this book on the podcast polyweekly and decided to give it a try. I liked the workbook format and that there were lots of interactive and fill in the blanks pages. I also liked that there were many examples of other couples/family units and their struggles with jealousy. It helped me identify how I feel jealousy, what triggers it, and how to manage it. I recommend it to anyone suffering in any way who still wants God in their life. I don't feel totally at peace with the possibility of my brother's death, but i do feel less alone in my pain. I also felt a nudge to be a better sister with the time my brother has left. I have been sort of ignoring the situation, his pain, my family's pain, and my pain. That isn't the best way to go. Anyway. We all struggle with life and this books helps the struggle. Buy it if you can.

I purchased this book just a few weeks ago. It sat on my nightstand for awhile because I was so angry about the current struggles my family is facing and I thought to myself “how can a silly book really help me?”. In a moment of dispair I decided to finally start reading this book. Two words: life changing. I’ve struggling with the hand that my family has been dealt and it has made me angry and resentful. This book doesn’t solve your problems, but what it does do is open you to an entirely new mindset that allows you feel, be gentle to yourself, and find the courage and strength to move forward. Read it, highlight it, reference it often.

A really poignant book and one that has helped me out several times over the years when I have encountered a rough patch in my life. I have since read a few other books by Rabbi Kushner, but this is the one I return to for its wisdom. I am not Jewish, but good advice and sympathetic experience are universal. She passed away 9 months after being diagnosed. I return to this book often, each time mining for something I missed upon previous readings. Each time I am consoled.I truly recommend this book for anyone going through a difficult time with a loved one's illness. And as a healthcare provider working with sick children, I also recommend this book to anyone who deals with suffering patients and families. It will add to your humanity and by doing so, allow you to help others on a deeper and more meaningful level.

This book is recommended for the position it takes and the explanations that most miss. We need more who understand that God created all systems that exist on earth and almost never interferes with the outcome that results from the choices we make. I think anyone wanting a better understanding of who our God (Creator) is and how He interacts with us - will enjoy this book.

I think this book would be suited best for someone deeply rooted in religion and it's dogma. If your beliefs are different or are elevated it will not help you find solace. My only complaint is that I would like a hardbound version or one with a more heavy duty binding. Lamsa's translation undoes a lot of the terrible theological debates Christians often become entangled in because the wording of most translations simply isn't correct. I've used this version heavily in study since I acquired it. I have perhaps twenty Bibles and this one is a favorite. This is an eye opening work, and it will change the way you ponder the meaning of a large number of verses in scripture. I highly recommend this one for anyone seeking the Truth and looking to get a better understanding of Christ. Thank you Mr. Lamsa for your work.

My favorite Bible translation. It's the clearest, purest, most direct translation of the original Hebrew and Aramaic. It really speaks to my heart. I always had trouble reading the KJV (with which I was raised), but the NIV and other "plain English" translations didn't feel right, either. The meaning in this Bible is so crystal...

This is easily the most beautiful book I own. The image doesn't really do it justice. The dark, deep, blue leather goes perfectly with the incredibly ornate golden designs on the front and back. These designs really pop in person. The pages are edged in a deep gold and it has a satin pagemarker. This edition also contains, I believe, all 241 of Gustave Dore's incredible biblical plate illustrations that could stand on their own. If you are searching for a Bible that attempts to respect the contents within by quality of appearance and construction, you can't go wrong with this one from Barnes and Noble.

I have had a few treasured study bibles over the years, but I discovered this one quite by accident recently. I have purchased both the hardback of the Open Bible & the Open Bible Expanded KJV in hardback (Old Time Gospel Hour editions). They are both excellent bibles. You are not so much as buying a "study" bible with notes at the bottom of the pages, etc. but rather one with outstanding resources within! If you are only able to find one version, either expanded or not expanded (Old Time Gospel Hour) either will be an excellent choice. However, I find that the hardback version of the Old Time Gospel Hour KJV to be handier to me in a few ways. The Old Time Gospel Hour KJV expanded edition includes a Visual Survey of the Bible and the opening notes are laid out in a better fashion. I included a photo in my review of the expanded bible version on top and the regular open bible on bottom, ,showing how the First book of Kings is laid out in each version. It is not that one is "better" than the other, it is just that they are different and both are very good. Both have outlines, charts such as monies, weights and measures (if not the same in some cases, have not checked word for word but look similar) to an old Nelson King James study bible I have (the one that is formally known as the Liberty Annotated study edition) The expanded edition has the notes and a chart on two pages and the outline on the following page. The regular open bible has it on 2 pages only. I will say that the font seems ever so slightly larger in the regular open bible, too. I have also included Titus as well and included a few pics of the visual survey of the bible section. The cyclopedic index alone is worth the price of the bible. It is absolutely fantastic. If you want a bible for serious bible study, you can't go wrong with this version. You don't have to worry about if this bible is true to God's word or not.. I am leery of some modern versions. My only suggestion is to be very sure what you are buying when you purchase & ask questions from the seller if you are in doubt of the version they are selling. I had a seller send a regular Holy Bible instead of this version, so that involved more time to find another copy elsewhere.

This review by Stan. In this 1611 edition of the King James bible there is a publishers preface of 8 pages just before the Apocrypha section, which is sandwiched between the old and new testament. I quote from page 4 "...This translation, commonly called the "Septuagint," was the Bible of Greek-speaking Jews in Egypt in two centuries before Christ and later became the Bible of the Jews of the Diaspora and of the early Christians....But they are not treated with the same authority as the books of Hebrew canon in the LATER and CONTEMPORARY Judaism." capitols are mine for emphasis. It points out, the Apocrypha was in the bible well before Jesus was. IT WAS LATER DECIDED IT WAS NOT SUPPOSE TO BE IN THERE.I quote from page 5 of the preface to the Apocrypha, "The earliest known translations of the whole Bible into English are associated with John Wycliffe (or Wyclif) and his followers. These are usually dated between 1380 and 1388. Because the Wycliffite Bible was translated from the Latin Vulgate, it includes the books of both the Testaments and the Appendix. So from the beginning, the English Bible was translated with the Apocrypha." IT WAS LATER DECIDED IT WAS NOT SUPPOSE TO BE IN THERE.Page 7 of the preface shows a listing of the books of the Bible, and shows the books we now call the Apocrypha and Deuterocanonical dispersed among the books of the old testament, not separated out. The Wikipedia entry of the Septuagint also shows the books of the Apocrypha dispersed throughout what we now call the old testament.So, the Apocrypha was in the bible 200 years before Jesus, and was therefore most likely in the bible Jesus and the apostles used and quoted from. It was the bible of the first Christian church. I prefer to read a bible as close to what Jesus and the apostles used as I can. Since I only know English, I give this King James version Bible 5 stars.I would suggest reading the Septuagint in addition to the KJV. The Apostles Bible is a good version which I have read and own.
